a post for the pops

because i've been slacking in the posting work department, and a certain someone's been calling me out on it... here's some stuff that feels like i made only yesterday, but was really from three weeks ago. we had a "client" project for photo imaging where we had to produce two different options for a cd case, book cover, and exhibition poster. in the spirit of clients and cd covers, here's a client letter i found on swiss miss that i think you'll especially enjoy, dad.

gd or die

andy and i will be pulling out all the stops today at the graphic design table during mica's major cafe. the two of us (and a couple teachers) will be sharing work, but most importantly, bribing any undecided freshman with well designed buttons and other goodies in an attempt to bring them over to the dark side. come grab some of these gd posters to tile to your heart's content!

all roads lead to linco

carey and i went to pick up the pimlico zines this weekend in new york, where we got them printed a la bern (ted sutton, martha's place) at linco printing in long island city. it was quite the adventure getting there (and then actually getting all 1,000 zines back to baltimore) but it was so satisfying to be able to see something i worked on actually produced in official print form. i took so many sneaky shots inside linco, the unassuming workers there probably thought i was crazy. but i loved taking a sneak peak into their plate making room and seeing the giant rolls of newsprint they were storing. so fricken sweet.





i am amazed with how well it all turned out. and it's totally because of the kids. we just worked with their words and their photos. and their request for a playground. i really hope this helps to make that happen. i put the zine up on issuu to help with digital distribution, so you can check it out in it's entirety there. or you can just ask me for a copy.

updates

last semester i had the opportunity to learn from two teachers who were working on some amazing things. my concrete culture teacher, sarah doherty, and my open city teacher, dan d'oca. after my time with them ended, they kept on going.

sarah took the alley we used for our final projects (and the alley behind her carriage house) and turned it into a full-fledged installation space. definitely check out the hundreds of pictures on the "axis alley" blog and flickr. i won't attempt to do the whole thing justice with the photos i've pulled to post here.


dan went to rotterdam (along with two students from the class and his firm, interboro) and installed an exhibition based on our arsenal of exclusion/open city baltimore project at the international architecture biennial. (along with co-curating the us portion of the biennial.) these were some pics he sent to our class from the opening in september:

a typecast tour

we took a tour of my letterpress teacher's studio today, and i think it's safe to say the entire class was smitten. so many beautiful, beautiful machines and a really cool space. (i think i could have spent hours in there just taking pictures.) we got to test out one of her platen presses (which she affectionately calls "big boy") and print some coasters. and while you fear for your fingers the first time you give it a whirl, it actually ends up being a lot of fun. and much easier than the vandercooks we use in dolphin press. if only we had had something like that to help us with all of our registration issues on the previous projects...

so worth skipping science

this happened last thursday, but i want to go back in time to it anyway because it was just such an awesome event. in celebration of their new book, lettering & type, bruce and nolen (of post typography/double dagger fame) organized a book launch/lecture at mica with 26-ish artists & designers each tackling a letter of the alphabet with 5-ish minutes each. i laughed. i cried. i learned about the alphabet. and saw it with the fresh eyes of a 5 year old watching sesame street. definitely check out their website for the book. or better yet, buy it!
